Quatrefolic® is a bioactive folate which – unlike folic acid in most food supplements – is directly available in the metabolism.
Folic acid (i.e. the synthetically produced pteroylmonoglutamic acid) cannot be converted into bioactive folate (5-MTHF) by all people.
This is due to an otherwise harmless and usually undetected genetic defect.
If people with this genetic defect take folic acid with a dietary supplement, only the level of unprocessed folic acid in the blood increases.
Folate, which is important for the metabolism, cannot be produced in these people.

As these irreversible defects develop so early, it is too late if the pregnant woman starts taking folate when the pregnancy is established.
This is because the pregnancy is not diagnosed until after the third week.
